When Su Wan mentioned Mo Yao, the atmosphere in the car, which had just eased, immediately tensed up again.
The color that had just returned to Xiao Han’s face instantly faded considerably.
He instinctively glanced at Lu Shiyan, “Uh, Sister Su Wan…” He spoke dryly, trying to hide it with a smile, “This matter…”
Lu Shiyan’s action of wiping his military knife did not pause in the slightest.
“Last night, it was already decided,” he interrupted Xiao Han, unperturbed, “Her path, she walks it herself.”
“We don’t have the extra energy to delay our journey for an irrelevant person.”
These words were direct and cruel, cutting off the last unrealistic thought.
Su Wan lowered her eyes.
She understood Lu Shiyan’s meaning.
In the apocalypse, everyone was preoccupied with themselves; kindness was the cheapest thing, sometimes even leading to fatal danger.
She took a deep breath, and when she looked up again, her eyes were clear: “I understand.”
She was not a savior; for now, her priority was to protect herself and the child in her belly.
Going north to find her father was the most pressing matter.
Everyone packed their belongings, mainly Su Wan taking out some necessary supplies from her space and distributing them: food, water, ammunition, and some common medicines.
Lu Shiyan checked the condition of the off-road vehicle; fortunately, it had only been scratched before, and the engine and tires were still intact.
The group got into the off-road vehicle. Lu Shiyan drove, A Mo sat in the passenger seat, while Su Wan, Xiao Han, Li Kui, and Li Xinhu squeezed into the back seat. Although the space was a bit cramped, no one complained.
The off-road vehicle emitted a low roar and drove away from the desolate hills, heading towards the vast north.
After the car had driven for some distance, Su Wan suddenly felt a subtle abnormality. Ever since she absorbed the power of the energy stone that night, her five senses seemed to have become even sharper.
At this moment, she could clearly perceive that in the direction they had left, about one or two kilometers away, there were several faint but agitated energy fluctuations.
“Wait!” Su Wan suddenly spoke out.
Everyone in the car was startled, and Lu Shiyan immediately slammed on the brakes, causing the car to jolt.
“What’s wrong, Sister Su Wan?” Xiao Han leaned over.
Lu Shiyan also looked at her through the rearview mirror, his eyes questioning.
Su Wan frowned, sensing carefully: “It seems there are people near the air-raid shelter where we were before.”
“People?” Xiao Han was startled, “Did Lei Laohu’s men find us so quickly?”
Li Kui and Li Xinhu also became nervous.
Lu Shiyan’s expression remained unchanged: “Quantity? Strength?”
Su Wan closed her eyes, trying to distinguish: “Roughly… five or six people, the energy fluctuations aren’t strong, they shouldn’t be ability users, or they’re very low-level. They feel… sneaky.”
Lu Shiyan pondered for a moment: “They should be scouts sent by Lei Laohu, or some stragglers looking to pick up scraps.” He glanced behind, “We’ve already left, no need to pay them any mind. Accelerate.”
Su Wan nodded, feeling a bit fortunate in her heart. Fortunately, they left in time, and fortunately, her perception had suddenly enhanced. This might be an additional benefit brought by the energy stone.
The car restarted, moving a bit faster than before.
Xiao Han leaned closer to Su Wan, lowering his voice, a look of curiosity on his face: “Sister Su Wan, when did you develop this ability of super hearing and clairvoyance? Did you learn it from the little one in Lu Da Shao’s belly?”
Su Wan glared at him, annoyed: “If you talk nonsense again, you won’t get any meat buns next time.”
“No, don’t, Big Sister Su Wan, I was wrong, I’ll shut up!” Xiao Han immediately raised his hands in a gesture of surrender, causing Li Kui and Li Xinhu to chuckle softly.
The off-road vehicle bumped along the uneven, abandoned road, raising a trail of dust. The dilapidated ruins of City A were long left behind, replaced by an endless wilderness.
Withered yellow weeds swayed in the cold wind, and occasionally, a few desiccated animal skeletons could be seen, adding a touch of desolation to this silent land.
After driving continuously for nearly seven hours, dusk gradually fell. Lu Shiyan slowed the car, his gaze vigilantly scanning the surroundings.
“We’ll rest tonight at that abandoned farm up ahead,” he said, pointing to a few crooked buildings not far away.
The farm had long been deserted; the doors and windows of the few houses were dilapidated, and most of the courtyard wall had collapsed. But the relatively open terrain and the few houses that could still barely provide shelter from the wind and rain made it a good temporary campsite.
A Mo was the first to get out of the car, stealthily entering the farm to scout like a leopard. A moment later, he signaled that it was safe.
Everyone got out of the car one after another, stretching their somewhat stiff bodies.
“I’ll go see if there’s a usable well,” Li Kui volunteered, carrying a bucket and walking towards the deeper part of the farm. Li Xinhu, meanwhile, began checking the surroundings for potential dangers.
Xiao Han stretched and yawned: “Finally, we can rest our feet. Sister Su Wan, do you have any supper to reward us hard-working protectors?”
Su Wan took out some steamed buns and bone broth from her space and handed them to him: “It’s good that I still have provisions in my space. When we find a safe place, I’ll make you something better.” She also took a steamed bun for herself and slowly chewed it. The little one in her belly seemed to feel hungry too, moving slightly.
Lu Shiyan walked to Su Wan’s side and asked in a low voice, “Are you tired?”
Su Wan shook her head, not a trace of weariness on her face; instead, she looked relaxed.
“Not tired.”
She answered directly.
“And I feel great right now, full of energy!”
Just then, Li Kui, who had gone to fetch water, suddenly came scrambling back, his face pale, gasping for breath: “No… not good! Big… big guys!”
“What big guys? Speak slowly!” Lu Shiyan frowned.
“Pigs! So… so many mutated wild boars! They’re the size of calves, with really long tusks!” Li Kui pointed to the back of the farm, his voice trembling.
Before he finished speaking, a slight tremor came from the ground, becoming more and more obvious. Immediately after, dull “snorting” sounds and heavy breathing approached from afar.
“Prepare!” Lu Shiyan growled, a cold glint flashing in his eyes.
Everyone reacted quickly. Xiao Han and A Mo immediately raised their weapons, guarding Su Wan on both sides. Li Xinhu also came around from the other side, blocking in front with Li Kui.
At the back of the farm, dust flew as seven or eight enormous mutated wild boars charged towards their location with heavy steps.
These boars were covered in dark brown stiff bristles, standing up like steel needles. Their eyes glowed with a bloodthirsty red light, and their two thick, curved tusks gleamed with a chilling coldness in the setting sun’s afterglow. Every breath they took exhaled white, murky air.
“Holy crap! Are these pigs? These are prehistoric beasts!” Xiao Han couldn’t help but curse, his submachine gun already aimed at the boar charging at the front.
